Best Caliber
What do you guys the best Caliber for deer hunter is.
I feel it is .270 win. |
RE: Best Caliber
Perfect caliber for deer...cant go wrong with a 3006 or .308 either....3006 is a more of an all round caliber incase u wanted to try bear or mule dear hunting some day
|
RE: Best Caliber
I'd say the unpopular .280 if ammo didn't cost and arm and a leg. I'm with ya on the .270 brother. Best guns I have ever shot.

RE: Best Caliber
.270

RE: Best Caliber
i's definately go w/ the .308
|
RE: Best Caliber
i dont think there is the"best" deer caliber. there are TONS of calibers that will work great. you can go with a 30-30 or somethin like a 45-70 if you wanted to. its all personal choice. yeah i'd have to say .270 or 30-06 is a great deer round. but i still think its all personal choice. what do you like shooting better.

RE: Best Caliber
Iam gonna have to disagree with yall. EIther the .325 WSM or .300 Win Mag.
|
RE: Best Caliber
for strictly deer and nothing else other than antelope i'll go with the 25-06.
but overall best cartridge imo for anything in north america i'll go with the 30-06. |
RE: Best Caliber
.270- i like this caliber, but i wish i wouldve gotten a .30-06
|
RE: Best Caliber
i think the best deer caliber is whatever u can shoot accurately enough and put it where it counts Be it a 223 or a 338 if you're accurate with it and feel comfortable with it and its adequatethan thats the best deer caliber for you. Everyone is different and everyone has different needs and desires so there is no best caliber for everyone. My personal preference for deer is a 6mm remington. My 223 has accounted for alot of deer though also. It's all in what you're comfortable with within legal and ethical means.

RE: Best Caliber
308 all the way for me
|
RE: Best Caliber
30-06 is what I use. I like the "30" rounds. I like the 300 mag, and the 308 both. I don't own a 280 or a 270. But a friend has a custom 280, and it's a nice shootin load/gun.
|
RE: Best Caliber
30-06 or a 7 mag
|
RE: Best Caliber
I dont think theres a "best" caliber for deer. But as close as a person can get would be a .270, 243 or a 7 mm rem. mag. but the only important part about hunting is the bullets placement and how effectivly it transfersits energy to the animal. as long as it develops about 700 ft.lb. and the bullet is placed right and does its job your deer wont ran very far, if at all.
|
RE: Best Caliber
i agree with yall i gott a 270 and and 280 and friends got a 7mm i love all three of them they are all nice far as i can see him with my 280 i can kill him..
|
RE: Best Caliber
It would prob. be a .308 or a 30-06.I like the 30-06 alittle better due to the versatility of it.
|
RE: Best Caliber
I think a .270 is best like just about everyone else says.
|
RE: Best Caliber
i agree with the 25-06 i just got a remington 700 sps and i love it. It is a nice flat shooting round with plenty enough knockdown power to kill deer. I have also shot pigs and coyotes with it.But i also agree with the.270 if you are going to hunt bigger game. then again i have heard of people successfully hunting elk with a .243 but i wouldnt.Just dont get that bazooka elephant gun .300 mag. that is way too big. good luck hunting next season with whatever you get. Send me an e-mail or pm and tell me what you decide on.

RE: Best Caliber
06 is the best all around caliber for any big game...IMO. I'd pick a 30 caliber round over another any day of the week. I'd shoot a 30-06, a 300, or a 308 any day, before I'd shoot a 25-06, a 270, or a 280.

RE: Best Caliber
270 or 7mm
|
RE: Best Caliber
30-06
|
RE: Best Caliber
just to clarify . the 30/06 and the 308 are ballistic twins. the 308 has less recoil which in most cases makes it the better choice of the two in some opinions. the man who invented the 243 took it to col. elk hunting for 15 years and took elk every year the most rounds he ever put into an animal was 2. ive seen people with 300 mags do 3 or 4 shots. so it was just bulet placement. in my opinion every caliber out there is a viable deer caliber in the right hands. i have taken deer with my 22 hornet. i also have used a 45/70 . every round mentioned here is a great round everyone is corect. its just personal preferance. i personaly dont like getting my shoulder murdered so i like the 223 wssm with 68 grainsp. this hot round has put several big deer down for the count for me. but you pick yours.

RE: Best Caliber
270 personally

RE: Best Caliber
This is a really hard question to answer. Ive used many different rifles since i started hunting 13 years ago. Im 19 now.
Here isa list of what i have used. [ul][*].250 savage[*].243 savage[*]30-30 winchester[*]Browning 270[*]Savave 270[*]7 mm mag remington[*]30-06 browning[*]30-06 mossberg[*]remington 308[/ul]out of all those im using a 30-06 right now. Thats my preferred gun. It has plenty of power to knock down a whitetail at a good distance shot if required. But, the 243, 250, and 270 can be a little more accurate. I didnt really like a 308 or 7mm. And the 30-30 does not shoot accurately enough for me. |
RE: Best Caliber
Honestly, all the answers on this post were correct (given that each caliber is used within its limitations) And to be quite truthfull, there probally isn't a (best) caliber that will ever be agreed upon. here is a list of calibers that can be used for deer. (some states do not allow certain calibers, so check with the laws first) where I hunt in new york...a caliber of .243 is the smallest that we can use for deer. So lets start with the .243
.243 6mm 240 weatherby 250 savage 257 roberts 257 weatherby 25-06 6.5mm 260 264 win 270 win 270 weatherby 280 win 284 7mm 7mm ultra mag 7mm stw 7-08 7-30 waters 30-30 300 savage 300 win mag 300 ultra mag 300 weatherby 308 win 30-06 303 british 303 savage 32 special 8 mm 338 win 348 358 35 rem 35 whelen 405 win 444 marlin 450 marlin 45-70 gov. 45-90 45 cal. muzzleloader 50 cal.muzzleloader 54 cal.muzzleloader find out what your applications are and go from there. you have quite a list to choose from. (and there are even more cals. that u can use for deer) even though not on this list. good luck huntin I hope you choose the right gun for you:):) |
RE: Best Caliber
12 gauge cause i dont hunt the Rifle
|
RE: Best Caliber
y does everyone always post this?you just opened up a can of worms, but i think 270 personally...i know i know 30-06 is nice but its a perference
|
RE: Best Caliber
I'll toss my vote onto the pile.
ANYTHING from 6.5mm up to .338 (this includes nearly all the popular cartridges...the 243 and .44mag rifle being the only 'good' deer cartridges I think it leaves out) The type of bullet you shoot is going to matter a whole lot more than its diameter...or even its weight. However, If I was going to have only one cartridge to shoot only deer with for the rest of my life I would choose a modern 6.5X55swede-OR-7X57mauser or a .260-OR-.280 (flip a coin, there the same difference) in a carbine rotary lever action...which I'm pretty sure haven't been made since the Savage M99's. |
RE: Best Caliber
iuse a 30-06 and i feel that is the right gun for me. also there are bears where i hunt and if iwanted to go bear huntin while im deer huntin then i have a big enough gun to take a bear down
|
RE: Best Caliber
I think the best caliber is 30-06 that is what i use i have shot three deer with it and it worked great.
|
RE: Best Caliber
well ive used a .243, 22-250,30-06, and a .270 and i have liked the 30-06 and the .270 for deer because they both have the power to knock down deer and have a longer distance shot
