Experiment

As an experiment I'm mowing my clover in strips. That is I mowed half of the clover field in arternating rows. Leaving the row inbetween unmowed. My thinking is this, mowing stresses the clover so by mowing half at a time I will only stress half the clover. The deer prefer new growth, with half at a time being mowed I will lengthen the time that new growth is available IN THEORY. What Cha Think?

In theory it sounds like a good idea. How much clover do you have?

I think you will mow twice as often in half the time!

What about unwanted grasses that might come to seed in the unmowed sections? Wouldn't that create weed problems for your clover plot in the future? Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah - that is a good plan -

Some of the Older Seed heads will help to reseed the plots later on. But - keep in mind that as the plot matures - you will want to mow each strip before 2/3 of it is "in bloom". This forces the clover plant to "refocus" its energy on growth - rather that on seed production.

Usually - the last mowing of the Summer - will have ALOT of seed heads.
