russian olive trees

do deer like the fruit of these trees? I hear they can grow 6 feet a year and produce fruit quick. I did a search but did not find to many deer related stories.

RE: russian olive trees

I think you may be referring to the Autumn Olive or a shrub in that family. We have several on our farm and yes the deer do eat them. They are a fast growing shrub or small tree reaching a height of about 14 feet and a width of 12 feet. They were planted in large numbers on strip mines in Southwestern Virginia. The turkeks also eat the berries, as do all birds. That's one of the problems with them; the birds can reach the berries, and usually eat most of them before the deer can.
