RE: CWD
Its the unknowns about CWD that make me worry. How exactly is it transmitted hasn't been 100% established. The states have curtailed the moving of deer across state lines and are trying to keep up with the pen deer populations, but the unknowns of possible transmission ways are still ongoing. Other states that allowed baiting have changed the laws. I am talking about the theories of urine sold as sex attractants possibly being a transmission way. The possibility of deer heads being brought hundreds of miles to local taxidermy shops where the antlers are sawed off exposing and spreading the brain tissue which is where the prione protein is concentrated. Lots of unknowns about this stuff. Deer and Deer Hunting magazine and the Quality Deer Management Association literature have had some good articles about CWD.

RE: CWD
Does anybody know if CWD has spread to the east coast yet, and if it is communicable to humans? Let me know!

RE: CWD
I don't think it has gone futher East than Wisconsin. We are trying to stop it at the border in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Wisconsin is shooting off deer as we speak. The deer urine theory is very interesting. Also taxidermy. Our world has become quite small. We are plagued with exotic fish, zebra mussels, etc. in the Great Lakes. AFbound, remember, the marines take a few good men. The Air Force takes all good men. terry <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

All urine base sents have been banned in my area.

RE: CWD
No one would know if CWD has spread east off the Mississippi River (except Wisconsin) because ONLY Wisconsin has been testing for it (past 3 years). Some states have now begun testing/monitoring or formed a action plan, but most samples will be taken during the up coming gun deer season.
Only a handful of labs in the country are certified to handle CWD testing, and will be over capacity this season. Results will most likely start being released in the Feb, March, April time frame. Prions have never been located/discovered in urine or tarsal glands, so bottled scents are safe. Edited by - Sag...again on 10/02/2002 10:17:03 |
RE: CWD
I live right in the Heart of CWD in Wisconsin. It is a 250 square miles, of posibly infected area.
There is a 25 square mile area where all the deer need to be killed, I hunt just outside that area, and only have to kill 80% of my deer. So that is going to 30 deer on my 250 acres I am pissed....... |
RE: CWD
Wyatt, It's really a shame that you have to kill the deer. What is the alternative? This is a terrible thing and if another solution can be found I'm sure it would be implemented. I hope it can be eradicated and not just contained. It seems we have been plagued with all sorts of nasty stuff in the last several years. CWD is a lot worse than TB of course. terry
