WHAT TYPE OF LIME

Is there a proper type of lime to use for clover, or is all lime the same? I want to apply lime this weekend. The frost is out of the ground where I want to plant, but planting is still 3 weeks or so away. (I live in WI)

I am going to use pulverized limestone it is a little quicker, it is almost in a powder form to start with

you can buy ag lime around here from a rock quarry for $6/ton. it is slow acting but lasts several years.

you can buy hydrated lime from a feed store, it is very fast acting (it's calcium hydroxide, you chemistry majors would understand). it's about $12 for a 50 lb bag, i think.

useful tip: if you have to get rid of some organic matter in a hurry, put a bag or two of this on top of it and add water.

You mean like disposing of a body, how many bags per person?

Isn't calcium hydroxide also known as Lye ?
That stuff is very corrosive and hazardous to handle compared to ag lime .

Nevermind , I found out that lye is sodium hydroxide . We have a concrete accelerant at work who's base is potassium hydroxide , and the MSDS compared it to lye .

RE: WHAT TYPE OF LIME

to keep it simple, i would go with a 1:1 ratio of organic material to CaOH.

example: you dig a 6' deep hole in the ground and place a 175 lb organic object in there. how much CaOH should you place over it, after removing all jewelry and other identification?

answer: 175 lbs of it, then add water and cover with dirt.

a few years ago i used some of this to lime my lawn. the next morning the skin was eaten off my hands. it's some strong stuff.

I spread pulzerized lime last spring and then tilled it into my plot. If you choose to use pulverized lime make sure you don't spread it on an windy day. The slightest breeze will send up a white cloud.
