Multi species food plot help
My girlfriends father wants to disc up the back 7+ acres of her property to prevent it from getting out of hand.
I have a few options to suggest as possibilities of what should be done. They are as follows: 1. Do nothing. This would be a great option as it is just right for pheasant and quail cover now. Only a temporary option. 2. Disc it up. This is the suggested option to prevent overgrowth and much work later with sapling, etc. but may temporarily destroy bird habitat. 3. Plant the food plot of my choice. This is my favorite option as there is plenty area to plant multiple crops like corn, clover, soybeen etc.. Is there a crop that would bring in and hold deer, turkey, pheasent, quail? Any help would be much appreciated. Here is an aerial photo of the area. The 7acres in green is the area in question. West is hundreds of acres of woods. Small area in front is farmed with vegetables (3 acres in green). North and South of potential food plot is being sold off as 4 acre parcels and will likely be built on. I feel that there may be a need for a buffer of corn or sorghum on the sides. |
RE: Multi species food plot help
1st - soil test and amend as required
with that much land you could do some different things - most of which will depend on your bugdet and what equipment you have access to. simple plot that critters love would be clover (mix of ladino & red) you may want some warm season stuff that will sustain animals through the summer maybe some annuals that provide good cover/food in the spring & fall corn?? - expensive to grow/manage like i said, it all depends on your goals, budget, & resources |
