Alabama food plot recommendations
 

Anyone have any suggestions for what would be good to plant in West Alabama and when. I've planted a mix before and it turned out nice but I would like to try a couple different things in different plots to see what was prefered more. Also plot sizes.

I hunt 2 different types of properties. One is riverbottoms and is known to flood about 2 times during the season. Anyone have any suggestions as to what can be planted that may be able to survive being flooded for a few days. The river only floods during late December so maybe if the plots were mature it might survive. Dont really know. Hoping someone has had this problem before. My other land is on high groung so really no problems there.

What did you plant before and why weren't you happy enough with the results to want to plant it again?

I don't know of anything for food plots that could survive a river flood. Best bet would be to get on one of the swamp islands, if you have one, and try the normal food plot blends. Where are you, on the Tombigbee?

I'm thinking cereal grains (wheat oats rye) could survive temporary flooding.

Assuming the river floods most every December - I'd suggest an annual planting each year in the lowland plots. A clover like Crimson clover - is a great fall planting (Late August - Early Sept in AL) and it is economical to plant if you have to do it 2x per year. Maybe mix in some cowpeas too.

When the flood waters receed for the last time - over seed the are with an anual clover again - It might last through a good part of the summer.

You might try mixing in a white clover - like Ladino - to see how well it had handles the flooding - but basically - most clovers (and crops in general) cannot take more than 3-4 days underwater.

I live on the Sipsey River in West Alabama. Last year I planted Pennington's mixed blend. I dont remember everything that was in it but I know it had clover, rye, and something else. It came up ok I guess but I think Im going to plant all clover this year. I just ordered a bag from Whitetail Institute. I've heard alot of good things about their products. Im going to scout around and find some of the higher spots to plant on. I may go ahead and plant on some of the low areas too, that way the deer will have it there for a few months anyway.
