Frost seeding in IL
 

WHen is a good time to frost seed some clover in IL? We're having high temps in the 40 and lows in the 20s now so I would think now would a good time to catch the ground in the freezing thawing cycle but I concerned its too early and that we might have another cold snap before spring comes.

check with your local ag agent. It sounds like the conditions could be right. If there's not much snow and you are getting the honeycomb effect in the soil - go for it. If the ground is still frozen and it is just getting warm in daywith no effect on the soil - it's not the right time. Don't worry about future weather (ie - cold). All you are doing is trying to get the seed in good contact with the soil. It won't germinate until the soil warms enough and weather breaks.

I hunt in Jefferson/Wasington county Illinois and was thinking about doing
the same thing. I think I am going to wait about two weeks and try to frost seed some imperial whitetail clover and alpha rack. I may try a small area of biologic in the fall to see how well it does. Good Luck

We usually do it about the middle of March in Delaware, you guys are just getting antsy, I know the feeling, I want to start fertilizing some lawns while the ground is frozen,,, We are putting Nitrgoen on Wheat right now....and chasing Snow geese off.......
