New Plot
 

I just gained access to about 100 acres of huntable land. There is probably 30 acres or so of timber. Including 3 to 4 acre openings full of weeds. I was planning to hunt it this fall then come spring time I was thinking of planting some type of clover/cereal grain plot in a couple of these openings. The timber used to be used as a pasture, especially in the openings. Since the openings are somewhat large, would the soil be in decent shape? I'm just trying to figure out what to plant and how much lime/fertilizer you think i will need.

I would go ahead and take some soil samples, then get the disc out and plant some cereal grain plots now. Put about 250# of fertilizer per acre. You can come back next spring and lime for adjustment and plant some soybeans, corn, iron clay peas or something at that time.

Ditto TC... Start the fallowing process now. You will be supprized at the increase in animal usage when the soil is worked. Lime if possible. Maybe plant some rye this fall, you still have some time.

I am right with these guys. Do it now before we get to far into the fall. You will be amazed at the attractant you can create with a grain crop. They love the young crop in the fall. Soil tests are a great way to address you ground.
