Imperials Alfa Rack?

I live in North Dakota, and my uncle and I have been thinking about planting food plots on his land for some time now for better horn development, better deer habitat for hunting, and all that good stuff. We havent done a ph test on the land where we plan on doing it yet, but i was just wondering if anyone has tried Alfa Rack on such a harsh climate as what is in North Dakota. We can have tons of rain with moderate temeratures, and then we go into a drought consistantly. Then in the winters we recieve heavy snows which normally covers up the food sources. Do you think Alfa rack would be suitable for these conditions, or should i be considering another type of food for my food plot? Any information will be appreciated.

RE: Imperials Alfa Rack?

I too am going to try some alfalfa this summer. The thing to think about is whether or not you have deep well drained soils, and the ph should be between 6.5-7.5. The root system of alfalfa is very deep, so droughts should not effect it very much. They don't like to have their feet wet so be sure that the soil drains properly. The ph is THE most important factor for optimum growth.

I am going to try the Triple Crown alfalfa from the Southern States Co-Op. It is also a grazing alfalfa that is pre-innoculated and costs about $3.75 per pound. It takes about 20 pounds to plant an acre. So it is much cheaper than the Alfa-Rack. Try this website it should answer all of your questions http://www.americasalfalfa.com/alfalfau.htm Good Luck, and try to post your results.
