Mowing Clover

I'm still trying to decide on what to plant next year for my 1/2 to 1 acre food plot. I wanted clover, but then i heard you have to keep it mowed down or the deer wont eat it. I dont have the equipment to do that with. But i was wondering if i planted clover, and it got to were it needed cut, could i just set a regular riding mower to the highest deck setting and mow it with that? Or would that cut it too low?

You sure can, just do it when it is dry so it wont ball up on you.

I'd say that would work just fine it you can use that. The first year after planting I would let the clover grow all summer until coming to seed before I mow it so as to utilize the heads for a reseeding process. This is all providing you plant certified seed the first time around. If you do you will get several years of use out of that one planting with very little maintenance.LOL

That is what I use. Cub Caddet with a 54" deck. Works just fine.

I do this with a small kubota. Don't cut below 4" or it'll burn out a little. I cut in spring and late summer if not too wet or dry. I do this mostly for weed management because the deer keep the Imperial clover mowed down pretty good.

I agree with Ghost Farm (like your handle)

If the plot is small enough - the deer may tend to keep it browsed down. You might just have to trim the weeds out or use a hand wick applicator for Roundup on them.

I know guys that use a weedeater on small plots less than an acre of clover.
