Clover mowed down
Checked my plots this morning, six different plots and all of the Ladino is clipped to the ground. The BFO plots are also gone, but we have a series of below freezing weather. The annual rye is hardly touched yet nor are the brassicas. I have 3 does that are working on some Dutch Wite clover in our horse pasture (The horses are all up at the barn since hunting season started.) This late in the season most of the deer here have went nocturnal, and staying in deep cover. Just wondering, is anyone else having the same condition? Guess I will have to plant more or larger plots.

RE: Clover mowed down
I have a couple of small plots Russ. I have a 1/2 acre plot of imperial clover and had about 1000 sq' of powerplant I tried this year. The clover grew and was untouched all year. The deer seemed to prefer the power plant and ate it until it finally died of after the first hard frost. Since then the 1/2 acre of imperial clover has been mowed to the ground.
I know there isn't enough food to help the herd tremensly but it supplements their diet. I wish I had more land to plant. I plan to expand the Powerplant to 4000 or 5000sq' next spring but that's all the land I have to plant. I have to agree that once the first good frost hits they move right to the clover. It's been burried in snow a couple of times and the deer are digging to get at it and it's still green. |
RE: Clover mowed down
My BFO is also gone, and most of the Rye. And I saw signs of them working on some brassicas I had planted by the BFO, which was a cover crop for Clover. They got that too.
