missouri dust bowl!!!
Today makes a full 3 weeks my oats and rye have been in the ground and we have not had a single drop of rain. There is no rain forcasted for at least the next 7 days. I covered the seed by dragin the plot with chain link but now the dirt that covered it is mostly blown away, so the seed is just lying on top off the ground. Will any of it gernimate this fall with some rain or should I plan on reseeding with a good rain if it ever comes?
Thanks for any thoughts |
RE: missouri dust bowl!!!
I'm in the same boat here in Illinois. My seed has been in the ground for 2 and half weeks now and shows very little sign of anything coming up. There is a little here and there from the heavy dew in the morning but we need some rain bad. In your case I would think a good soaking rain would push the seed into the soil and give it good contact to germinate. Sounds like we both need rain

RE: missouri dust bowl!!!
You are probably getting dews, just leave it alone, walk away from it, sometimes it will take 21 days or more for it to germinate under ideal conditions, different germs for different seeds, locations, moisture conditions...dont drag over it again if it is getting a hair root and you drag it up , it will die off , check back with us is 2 weeks,

RE: missouri dust bowl!!!
We had 2 inches last week in Central MO--Osage county. I noticed it was a regional rain. We may run into some luck later this week according to the weather forecasts. It may be a dryer Sept, then Aug.
About 3 weeks ago I planted wheat and some clover. The wheat is coming up good, but at various hights. I need to check on my clover again. Before the rain, there was no sign of germination. |
RE: missouri dust bowl!!!
Thanks RonM, I was seriously thanking of dragin it again. I guess I will just wait and see what happens. Luckily here in southern mo the growin season runs pretty late. I still have a bag of Bio-logic sittin in the corner, but I'm goin to wait till we have another shot for rain. The weather service has just put our county on a drought watch list (what ever that means). So it is really drier than usaul. The leaves on the trees are dying and falling off already. Thats about a month or so early for here. The acorns have been fallin here for about the last week and a half and thats about a 3 weeks early. Should really put the deer on the food plots in the early rut if we can get some rain and a little green in the plot. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and maybe get out the drums and have little pow-wow.;)NDN
