Buck Forage Oats?

Has anyone planted Buck Forage Oats? If so how did the deer like the oat's? Do you prefer oats for a fall food source over clover? And how do you plant them? Thanks, Pike

not me - I'd like to though - it just seemed a little pricey.

my extention agent told me that Coker227 oats were the same as Buck Forage Oats.
I do know they are a lot cheaper and the deer love them.
that is what I plant now , along with rye.

I planted rye last year alone. then this year a few mo's. ago I did some Coker and the deer wiped them out.the hogs rooted the plot real bad.then the deer got the oats.
I put out the lime and was disking anyway so I seed them.
in another few weeks I will be putting them in all my plots.

I think www.seedland.com has 227 oats for sale at 13-14 bucks for a 50 pound bag. Thats 1/2 bfo price.

There were my best draw last year by far and lasted well into mid-December with numerous frosts and freezes and snow falls, with snow starting the first of October.

One way to offset the cost a little is to plant a 50/50 mix with annual rye. This planting also mixes well with clover, the rye is available throughout the winter and early spring, the oats freeze-out in the winter, and the clover picks up in the spring with only a 50% covering of rye to compete with.

I have 350#'s I'll spread out over 4+ acres this weekend on 10 differant plot locations, some mixed with clover and rye, some mixed with Extreme, but it will all be mixed with perrinial base to insure next year's spring and summer plot utalization.

Here are a couple of pictures of my buck forage oat plots with snow on them. You can see the deer really dug the snow up to get to them even into jan.
