Default corn or not

I was just wondering how many hunters are feeding corn this time of year and if your not why?

I've been scattering a bit of corn in some areas of my lease. This Saturday I'll fill two 300# home made feeders. They feed twice a day. This should last in to December.

I'll also prep some land for a food plot planting in September.

We feed deer corn in the winter time only. Thats not what they need this time of year. Deer feed or minerals now.

I've found that from about April through November, they won't touch corn. There are so many other things growing naturally that provide the nutrition they need. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but a deers body tells it what to eat when given a choice of foods. If it needs protein, it eats the beans. If it needs fat, it munches on acorns. Nothing will eat corn where I hunt unless it's December - February and there is nothing else.

Something ate over 600 lbs. of corn last year, Sept.-Dec. I know the turkeys, raccons, and deer ate part of it as I have them on film. That's not a lot of corn for 546 acres. It's kinda like eating a candy bar once a week.

We feed them corn year round from our automatic feeders. We just give them a little bit less in the summer when everything else is green. They are still glad to get it. I saw a fawn working on a corn stalk on my way home from work about two weeks ago.

I agree with NC on the corn issue. I don't think they hit it much unless the natural vegetation & browse is almost depleted. I sat near my corn feeder last year to do some observation during bow season twice. Both times the entire amount of feed dispensed from the unit was consumed totally by birds, chipmunks and squirrels! I only load the feeder in late Fall and Winter now - and I'm not sure that the deer eat any of it.

My feeders are in the middle of a pine plantation. No browse there except weeds along the road and a few thickets in the bottoms. I'll bushhog the road next month when I plant my food plots.
