Planting Oats Question...

Can I disc in my oats...or will that hurt the seed? I have a bed that is fairly well prepped...but I need to disc it more. Should I disc, plant and disc again?

Thanks!

BTW...All I'm working with at this point in the year is a disc and a 4-wheeler. No culti-packer.

RE: Planting Oats Question...

If you have a good seedbed (bare ground, not too lumpy), just throw your oats on and disk LIGHTLY to cover. When I farmed, the saying was that "oats will grow on a tin roof." However, it is best to get them covered and in firm contact with fine soil. Being covered also protects the seed from birds.

Don't disc them in too deep! Just lightly disc as was mentioned.

disc em in - its really hard to do oats wrong - they'll grow laying on top if you have enough rain.

They will grow through 1" covering though 1/4" is perfect.

RE: Planting Oats Question...

i would disc, plant then run a drag over to give the seed some cover so the birds wont take it all
