Cold Weather Peas
Im looking to plant peas for deer this fall. Are there any peas that can be planted that are frost resistant.

RE: Cold Weather Peas
Austrian Winter Peas. I am in Northern Miss and the temps did get below freezing a few times this winter, in fact we even had some snow. Those peas did great as far as growing, but after the first frost, the deer decided to move in on them. And they mowed them down. I have one patch near the house that they didn't browse to hard. Unless your winter is too severe, they should do you a good job.

RE: Cold Weather Peas
I had to leave earlier before I finished my post. I would like to mention that the peas need to be protected while they are very young or the deer will pull them out by the roots and there goes the plot. On 3/5 I made a post on a method to fence in the plot and keep the deer from doing this. Check it out.

Is it possible to plant a cover crop that will be taller than the peas until they become larger?

RE: Cold Weather Peas
Don't really know, it might work. something like annual rye or oats. But deer don't r ely on sight, they can smell the peas. I know they can see good but that nose is really their best food finder (and also one of their best defense tools.) Willing to risk 1/2 a plot? Plant a plot and protect half of it, see what happens.
