Default How to plant beans

We'll be putting the beans in the ground in the next several weeks and I wanted to research the best planting method. We just put down 2,850 lbs. of 19-19-24 a week and a half ago. How deep, etc. should we plant the soybeans? Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.

1-2 inches will be fine. if your broadcasting them and tilling make sure you make a couple passes with the cultipacker.

Thanks all. I appreciate it. So even in VA, I should still plant no deeper than 2"? I think that's what we probably did wrong since we've been 1 for 2 so far the last several years.

Had to reply again since I can't edit. We're not double cropping, so when would be the ideal time to plant in VA so we have beans during hunting season?

Having Planted a cumulative total of about 25000 acres of soybeans....the best advice I ever got...was....every now and then from the tractor seat, you should see an occasional bean...or they are too deep.

Maybe the deer are eating them before they even have a chance to really grow. I don't plant beans, but from what I understand once they are nipped the plant is done? Is this correct? That's one of the reasons we don't plant them in our plots. TGK.

osiris -

I'd heard the same knock on soybeans - that deer will nip them before they grow. That is not always true. What I've found is that spring planted soy is less bothered by deer than summer - or in a fall mix for deer. It is amazing how quick the deer will take out August planted attraction plots.

I think that when spring planted - so much other stuff is around that the majority of the beans make it.

By the way, if enough moisture is present, even the beans on top will germinate. Still 1" - 1-1/2" depth is perfect if you can control it.
