A friend used a shop vac and it worked well for him. I just can't do it myself. The neighbors will think I'm cracked! He did say that the deer really hit them hard when he put them out. He has white oaks, great big ones that drop a lot of nuts almost every year.

Just tell your neighbors that you are a whitetail specialist gathering supplies on a population controlling procedure or some other sort of BS.

I have imagined vacuuming up the yard. I once saw a restaurant owner vacuuming up pumpkin seeds for his restaurant. I have thought of stringing up a tarp and direct the seeds into piles.

I've tried to gather white oak and bur oak acorns for plantings many times. The problem is that acorns not eaten by deer and squirels often have worms in them. The squirrels and deer can smell the worms in the acorn, and leave the acorn to rot on the ground. Several bags I've gathers have turned to worm food and will never germinate. An Acorn found on the ground may be viable, or it may be already compromised.
