Compliment my clover plot

What would be the better crop to compliment my clover and have food for the winter?I planted rape this fall, about 1/2 acre and after the frost hit it the deer went crazy!Gone in a week! What would be the best between rape and rye.Or would winter wheat be better?
Does rye have to be mowed in the late spring and replanted the following fall?
Thanks

farm hunter had exellence success with a field of corn left standing. I don' t know if you can access his spring messages but they would make interesting reading.
