Winter Rye, Winter Wheat & Oats

I've seen where some of mixed winter rye and oat when planting their food plots but has anyone tried mixing all three (winter rye, winter wheat & oats) with any luck?

My cousin swears by winter wheat as a food plot. He's tried the rye with less success. But his location is in a big woods area with poor soils. There is no other cropland within a couple miles. Don't know if that's a factor.

Whatever you plant, take a soil sample to get checked to see what soil amendments it needs. I believe your local Agriculture extension will do it for you.

It kinda depends on area you're in. I've had good success with winter rye over here, but my buddies in other state had no success pretty much at all. I'm not sure if mixing all 3 would be the play thought, I'd rather stick to 1 type

Try Tritical seed. t is a hybrid of cereal rye and wheat.

Planting a mix isn’t a bad idea. Rye is the most hardy of the three, but normally the least favored. Beardless wheat is good. Oats are the favorite, but can winter kill sometimes.

Would not hurt to throw a legume or two in the mix. I have used vetch and winter pea in my area.

On my property last year I planted a half acre of BFO oats and a half acre WR and deer were always in the rye plot. The year before the deer liked the oats better. This yr I used Tritical in one plot and have seen very few deer in that plot.
