Default Unknown animal damaging lawn; advise on video cameras appreciated

Some sort of animal has been visiting my backyard at night (Southern California, San Bernardino County), and it ripped up part of the lawn (see attached picture). This never happened in the past, but it has been rainy over the past couple days to make the ground soft and easy to damage.

There are some coyotes in the area, but a family member suspects rabbits doing the damage (does it look like rabbits to you?). I am thinking about buying a motion-triggered video camera to identify the culprit - if it is coyote, then maybe I will see if the county permits pellet guns for me to drive them off my yard.

Would there be a video camera that can be triggered by movements in the backyard? It is about 50 feet long and 30 feet wide (I don't know much about cameras, but this seem to be too big of an area to be covered by one camera).

Thanks!

Looks like skunk damage, it is telling you you have grubs in your sod and the skunk is digging them out to eat them. Get your lawn treated to get rid of the grubs.

If you end up having to shoot a skunk, use a double lung shot instead of a head shot. That's what AC uses to avoid having the skunk spray while dying.

Exactly correct. If you shoor them through the lungs they may leak a little when they expire, however if you shoot them in the head they will short circuit and will spray.

Thank you Oldtimr and Elkman! I will get the grubs treated. Is Scotts GrubEx recommended for this?

Meanwhile, I will be on skunk duty.

Grub control will definitely help. That is why you have skunk damage.
