When should I plant wheat for fall and winter grazing? The location is south central kansas

Most winter wheat in my area gets planted after the current crop gets harvested, about say mid Oct on

But if all your doing is planting for critters, no reason I know of you could plant from right now on
reason most farmers here don't plant sooner is just due to they currently have a crop growing in area planned

it would just be taller planting sooner IMO
I have planted it in Early Sept in the past for food plots, grew just fine??

A buddy and I through out some wheat about 3 weeks ago for our dove field and its already coming up. I'd say wheat is pretty hardy and can be grown just about any where at any time during the year.

In my neck of the woods, if you are planting for grazing, you need to plant now. I don't plant mine for grazing, so I generally try to plant a little later to avoid a hard freeze damaging the heads in spring. But if you aren't worried about harvesting for grain, then that's not an issue.

The only reason I can think of to not plant now would be because of pest pressure from things like armyworms, and you should be at or past that now. Greenbugs, spidermites, and the like might be a problem, but if the seed is treated with Goucho or Cruiser, it should be fine.
