Frost seeding
I am thinking about frost seeding red clover in a clearing in the middle of the woods. My question is how much snow is too much to frost seed over? Everyone is saying to do it from mid february to mid march and early is better then late. Right now we about 4-6 " of snow.

I just frost seeded last weekend in NE Penna. and there was a couple of inches of snow and I thought it was perfect timing.
When spreading the seed you can see it laying on top of the snow and then when I was done we ran a quad over the area, but didn't real need to because we got another half inch of snow that night. |
Placing on snow is ok as long as there is little risk of a quick thaw and runoff - seed will wash away. I am personally waiting till the 6" of packed snow is gone in my side yard. I may likely miss my window but will still spread the seed - as long as it can get in contact with the soil it should be fine. That is the key - no matter what you do, if the seed doesn't make it to the soil it won't germinate.
