fussy deer!
 

I planted a small food plot of rye, white clover and a bit of buckwheat which is doing very well. The problem is that the deer won' t eat it. In fact they are walking right through it on their way to somewhere else. Could it be that they are saving it for later in the season? They seem quite happy to tear the branches off my apple trees.[:@]

I guess the apples are a delicacy in your area compared to the mix in the food plot.

Do not give up on it. #1 - your area could be like mine - and have had extra waterin the early summer - lots of wild forbs and undergrowth. Thats a good thing - and the deer do not " have" to eat the plot yet - its likely taht as the undergrowth browns and thins out - the plot will loook far better.

What is the soil Ph in the plot area???

I' m like FH. The deer in our area have a TON of natural browse this year. I haven' t been seeing near as many in my clover, or any of the fields around the area...as I did last year. Of course, your plot might taste bitter to them. Check your ph, like lunchbucket said.

I havent seen evidence of Deer feeding in our Ladino Plots but I dont have any cages in either. There are some heavy trails headed to them though. One thing I can tell you is some one left the gate open and the cows took out one plot, they sure liked the PH. Think its got time to regenerate before the season?

If the pH is right and you have fertilizer and rain the forages sohuld make a come back if you don' t get early frosts...
