Will it work
1 Attachment(s)
Hi, I aquired an older barely used Plotmaster 400 (non versa-seeder) and I'm needing to plant winter wheat around a field as a perimeter for a WHIP program. My question is how well does the Plotmaster do with this type of seed? Is it better to three point it or pull it with my Willys? If I three point it the Plotmaster only fits inside the width of my rear tires so subsequint passes with push the seeds to deep, right? I've got a pull-type disc so the one-pass thing isn't an issue but, the seed size is. Also, if I disc the crap out of the soil do I need to kill the vegitation. I'm so far behind it's killing me!! Thanks in advance for any help. I hope to use this forum often, If I can help I will. Here is a pic of my project. The dark brown it the border. The total project is about seven acres.

I would probably disc the area and broadcast the seed with either a hand crank seeder or a pull behind seeder and run a disc over it with the blades straightened out.

Well it been awhile since I posted, keep in mine I've never done anything like this before. I started out using the Plotmaster with the Willys on longish pasture grass. Yeah,...now I know. I then turned to an old two-bottom plow I had that was left by the previous owner of my place, it worked great...until it got hung up on my tow-bar. A quick trip to the nearest tree to pry it off worked like a champ, the only thing that broke off was that disking wheel thingy. After about four times aound the perimeter off my property I was done with the plow. After plowing everything was easier I went around two or three times with an old pull-type disc with four sections of an old telephone pole strapped to it, the soil was ready for the plotmaster.
Never using my Plotmaster before was another experience for me. I ended up using the 3 point hitch version of the Plotmaster 400. My tractor battery died so I used the Willys battery to run the tractor. Anyway, the one-pass thing is a little far fetched (IMO) after plowing and dicking it did work in one pass. I could tell where I had been one the pass before so I guess it worked. I have a rented out field that had just been combined, so I thought I would use the Plotmaster while I had it out too put down some turnips. I wanted a lush green plot like that one guy has in the other thread so I put the ole' Plotmasters seeder on "4". The Plotmaster has five settings for seeding rates 0 through 4. Well needless to say that I have a four foot wide path about 30-40 yards long that has 2 acres worth of turnip seeds on it. Along the the way the Plotmaster cultivators picked-up about 20 pounds of left-over corn stalks. I'm heading back down tomorrow to check the place out and see what is going on. All I have to do now is a quick fall spray of Round-up to kill some grass and repeat in the spring and I'll be ready to do my WSG's. I can't wait for that fun.!! I have had fun doing this stuff hardknocks is the best school around. |
