No Plow and First TIme Planter
Im lookingto put in a small plot, maybe 1/4 acre near my stand mostly just to get some pics and see add another food source.I am looking at the best place to plant. The srea I have is roots, real moist andhas alot of mossy, peaty type soil.I have raked alot of the ground bear. This area gets abvout 3 or 4 hours a day of dabbling sunlight due to the white birch trees overhead.
The second area is an open cutdown that was harvested last year.It has alot drier and more hard packed soil that is full of sticks, ect. This area gets direct sunlight all day but is pretty dry. My question is which area do you guiys think would be best for the WHitetail Institute to be planted?thank you! |
3-4 hours of sun is borderline. You will get growth, but it won’t be as much as another place with good sun. I would go with the open area. I know the soil may not look as good because it’s dry, but it may be fine. Even if it’s not that great, that can be fixed. Another idea would be to remove the sun blocking trees from the other spot, but that may not be an option.

1. Have you tested the soil ph?
2. Can you get lime to the plot? Also, what surrounds the area? You likely can't consider it another food source at the 1/4 acre size you have mentioned. You'll want to plant some sort of fall annual to have it be the best benefit. I would highly recomend going to a feed store and getting some oats. They grow just about anywhere and they don't cost much. Plant them in the end of August with rain in the forecast and you will be surprised at how well they will do. I have used them in just about any setting you can imagine. |
I would highly recomend going to a feed store and getting some oats. What Ben said. Oats are the way to go. i plant game plots at three widely dispersed places and in three different types of soil. Do not waste your money on expensive oat seed. Plain old feed oats work well at about $10 per 50 pound bag. Last year i planted some Chilocco oats and they did really well: Cost was about $15 per 50 pound bag. Here in OK some folks call planting oats "mudding in oats" because we plant them in ground that is very moist. |
get a soil test..
after that see what of the plants that best grow in this soil, then cross reference that with some plot stuff, maybe ya get lucky and wont have ta do anything.. ya wanna choose something the deer are eating in your area, as it takes a couple weeks for the deer to change food sources cause of their digestive system. so they wont change for a hand full off food.. ask the farmers what crop the deer are "destroying" and plant that.. see what ya gotta do to the soil to get to that foods "just right area" |
