Food Plot In The Woods?

I am just wondering if it is possible to put a food plot in the woods? If so, what would you plant that grows in the shade? When would you plant a food plot in the woods? Thanks .

When I think food plot, I figure at least a half acre. Is that about the size you are considering?

I'm thinking about putting some sort of food source on an old logging road. The logging road is about 300-400 yards long. Half of the road is on the southern slope of a ridge and the other half is on top of the ridge. The trees are a mixture of white oak, maple, and aspen. Any help is great, since I have never made a food source. Thank you.

In the shade...some fescue is good...
Maybe rye in early fall when its like 70f so the seed can germinate

400 yards x 10 feet wide is less than a 1/10th acre. I would opt for a sack of corn if legal. The shade is going to be hard to overcome.

White clovers can do well on trails. You'll want to plant it very soon though.

400 yards = 1200 feet x 10 feet = 12,000 feet, about 1/4 of an acre

I hunt in timber land with no real open areas, all of my plots are 10 to 40 feet wide and in strips from 100 to 150 or more yards. I guess you could say we plant our shooting lanes. Top whatever trees or bushes block the sun and you can plant whatever you like. We try to pick east west facings so we dont have to top pines. Works just fine for us.

Clear a few trees out and plant white clover, it grows most of the year and only needs to be mowed during the summer for weed control. Deer feed on it all winter when other plots are gone or dead. You don't have disc or plow the ground, just kill the other plants with Round Up and disturb the soil for good contact and you have a plot. You can get your seed from a local farm/feed store and it runs about $3 a pound and it only takes a couple pounds per acre. It is the same thing as the high priced clover from a hunting supplier.

We planted 2 1/4 acres of clover in our woods. 1 plot gets alot of shade and one gets alot of sun and the plot in the sun had alot of grass come up with the clover. We just sprayed the plot this past weekend to kill the grass. The first 2 pictures are of the plot that doesn't get alot of sun and the last 2 pictures are the plot that gets alot of sun. We planted these plots on Good Friday.
