when to start

When should I start putting out a mineral site for deer this fall? I've heard early spring. Does anybody have any experience with Deer Cane? Is the mix or liquid better? Also, how often should I go back to add more once started?

A mineral lick should be available for the wildlife year round. A 50/50 mixture of loose trace mineral salt and Di-Cal works fine and is cheap. About $17 will make enough for two lick sites. Pick a clay type soil, dig a hole about a little less than a foot deep and 3 or so feet wide, pour your mixture in the hole, add a little dirt and dig it in. Just add about 50 or so pounds per year to the hole. If they use it a lot, add it twice a year. A good lick will eventually be as big as the back end of your pickup.

I found the trace mineral and stock salt on Tractorsupply.com but I can't find the di-calcium phosphate. Is it called something else? so you're saying I don't need the stock salt just trace mineral and di-calcium?

IMHO that is all you need. Check with some other stores or see if they will order a bag or two.

If you haven't located the Di-Cal yet, around here its sold by Southern States co-op as "FeedPhos. I just recently purchased 50#s for $18.50. It shouldn't be to difficult for you to find, what I bought was from a company called Eastern Minerals INC, out of Henderson, NC.
