Food plots
 

ok me and my good huntin buddy have been wanting to put a food plot on my huntin land we have marked it out and figured how much seed we would need along with fertilizer but idk what kind of seed or seed combination to put in i have been looking at a clover mix and stuff that are perennials that will last for a couple years but i was wondering if anyone could help me find a seed combination that would work and any tips that would help me maintain the food for maximum production.

If SWT doesn't move this first, you'll find more answers in the Wildlife Management forum, nearly everyone there does food plots.

The best tip for maximum production and longevity is: get a soil test. If you plant a perennial, you will want to know if the soil needs lime and/or what you will need for fertilizer. If you do know your soil pH, posting it would help you get some great ideas from the guys here.

NYHunter, I found on my plots the deer absolutely love the new chicory seed. I used Whitetail Institutes Chicory mix which is Chicory & clover. They hammered it! I've planted some other types, and this was the most used. Of course as mentioned your soil must be prepped properly. I start my prep in late summer for following springs planting.

Onebigelk, I am sure you mean roundup ready seed a farmer purchased, planted in a previous year, and had extra seed left over. Monsanto will get very upset if you use a roundup ready crop as seed for next year.

It is indeed illegal to replant any patented seed. Maybe your farmer friend was growing open pollinated corn.....;)

You might want to check into some stuff they call lucky buck. As it is suposed to attrack deer and promote antler growth and is said to be good from 4 to 6 years.. They have their own web site at luckybuck.com.. Just some thing you may want to look into along with winter rie..
