till or no till
It seems a lot of people are going no till & spraying for weeds. The spraying seems to like it could be part of the problem w/ our birds as you keep dumping chemicals on the land where the birds are trying to live. Your thoughts?

What are you talking about?
Spraying takes place whether a field is no-till or not. |
spray wit weed killer, and then till

Even a banned insecticide like DDT is not as bad as it was made out to be. http://www.junkscience.com/ddtfaq.html

From the Pheasants Forever website:
"Must I use herbicides? Weed competition is the most serious threat your food plot will face. Thus, we recommend some sort of herbicide treatment. Food plots planted without weed control will have highly variable results. Weed problems can be addressed by tillage, chemical suppression, or a combination of both. A few weeds in a food plot will actually improve the diversity of the area for wildlife. However, severe weed competition that causes the primary planting to fail can waste your food plot investment, and puts your wildlife in a bad position when winter arrives. Pay attention to weed control recommendations on the bag for best results for your planting." |
Chemicals arent going to affect the birds in any way.

i disk and plant in the early spring before the grass and weeds start to grow. My fall plots are put in after the grass turns brown. We get some weeds and grass in our spring planted plots but not enough to matter. There are no weeds at all in the plots that are planted in the late summer and fall.
