RE: How many Deer per square Mile?
They have our area in the 30-35 range. It' s mostly farm/woodlot with state forest to our north.I would say the agriculture carries closer to 45 and the state forest closer to 20.You know where I' m at Jeff.;)

RE: How many Deer per square Mile?
I live in northern Miss, 1/2 mile from Tenn. line. On my 100 acres there are about 15 deer, so you do the math. There is plenty of natural browse, plus I have 4 food plots, all mowed down by browsing to 6 inches. A friend has 3-4 food plots north of me and they are well used. Not much size to the deer, and the buck/doe ratio is out of wack. The 4 of us that hunt in my area try to fill out on does, but others in the area are all after bucks. Dressed average weight on kills; bucks 160, does 140. Mowed the fallow field by one plot due to weeds and found 5 beds within 50 yds of plot. Harvested the large Pines in my timber and undergrowth is heavy this year, have had plenty of rain at the right times. Hope to see some larger deer this year.

germain, its a shame the PGC. cant get the herd reduced in the AG. area' s and and wont let the herd increase on state land, I bet next year your answer will be 15 DPSM. and there is just no reason for a herd that low in your area. Pike

RE: How many Deer per square Mile?
I agree Jeff, they keep reducing the herd in the wrong places. What reallycracks me up is the increases of doe tags for the areas with no access to hunting.People buy up the extra tags but end up hitting the areas that are already open to hunting. Therefore hammering areas that are already overharvested while the non access land continues to stay overpopulated,it' s a continueous cycle.Sort of like barking up the wrong tree.
Jeff, did you get your plot in and how' s it doing?Last time I went to the cabin the clover was sprouting along good. Now hopefully it will continue to grow.I' m hoping I got the PH to the right level. |
RE: How many Deer per square Mile?
we have the same problem down here in georgia deer get over populated in the residential areas so they keep raiseing the bag limit, its 12 this year so the deer get hammered in the rural areas see less every year. We figure we have 25 to 30 per sqr mile with our food plots and fertilizing the natural browse could probably carry twice that
