Fertilizer for trees????

I have heard about putting out fertilizer around oak trees and honeysuckle vines. What is the best fertilizer to use? 10-10-10 or something else? Also, what would be the best way to distribute it out?

10-10-10 will work fairly well as a tree fertilizer. If your soil is deficient in one of the macronutrients (N-P-K) you should select a fertilizer based on the soil or leaf analysis. Fertilize by poking holes about a foot deep around the drip line and pouring a half cup of fertilizer down each. You can broadcast the fertilizer around the dripline but the P will take a few years to work it' s way down to root level.

Fldeerman; try a solid steel bar. If the soil is moist you should get a reasonable hole and a sledgehammer will give a bit more depth.

I use 10-10-10 every year on the oaks around my hunting area. I bradcast it fron the tree base out to just past the drip line.I put about 5 lbs. per tree.
each year I have a better crop on these trees than the other ones, thus more deer and turkeys around me and mine stand.

now is the time.

When fertilizing apple trees, I use 10-10-10 and put out a handful per Inch diameter around the drip line - keep it mowed if there are grasses, and you can.

What time of year to you put the fertilizer out for the trees in the fall for the next spring or in the spring for that growing year?

Early spring, but always before July 1. If they trees get large amounts of nitrogen much later they will develop soft fall growth rather than hardening off for the cold weather. That results in winter kill of the branch ends.

RE: Fertilizer for trees????

I spread fertilizer around the oak and pecan trees that cover my deer lease where I bow hunt. A biologist told me that these trees will produce more nuts, larger nuts, and even sweeter nuts that the deer will seek out over other tress. We also clear out all the seater trees and underbrush that has the tendancy to grow under these trees
