Turnips or Rapeseed?

My friend planted some Purple Top Turnips and Rapeseed. But we can't figure out which is which. One has smooth green leaves and tastes sweet. The other has rough leaves with little hair like stuff on them and is kind of bitter tasting. The plants with the smooth leaves are almost knee high. The deer are eating the smooth ones.

the rough ones are the turnips. The rape will have yellow flowers on them later. Deer eat the rape sooner and wont touch the turnip until after a first frost. Turnips are starchy until then and after a frost the starch turns to sugar

My friend has another plot that,(now we know is turnips) in it and the deer have been pulling them up out of the groud for a few weeks now and are eating the bulbs.
