RE: Questions on fertilizer and herbicide
I bet you'll need 100+ lbs of actual K per acre, and maybe 50 lbs or so of actual P. So start looking for inexpensive sources of the fertilizer. I usually take a couple of 5 gallon buckets to a grain elevator/fertilizer dealer and buy it from their bulk source. It's much cheaper than anything in a bag.

RE: Questions on fertilizer and herbicide
Okay, I got the results this morning...
Soil pH: 5.2 Recommendation: 4200 lbs/acre dolomitic limestone to achieve target of 6.5. P: 27 K: 68 Ca: 251 Mg: 38 Zn: 3 Mn: 11 B: 0.2 Cu: 0.7 Na: 13 Recommendation: 100lbs P, 100lbs K (per acres) I don't have 6 months to allow the lime to do its thing. Do you guys think it's even worthwhile to pursue this food plot based on these results? |
RE: Questions on fertilizer and herbicide
100 lbs/a K2O, Potash = 0-0-60, Potash = 60% K2O 100/0.60 = 167 lbs/a Potash
100 lbs/a P2O5, DAP = 18-46-0. Keeping math simple, assume 50% P2O5. 100/0.50 = 200 lbs/a DAP (you may have access to other forms of P, adjust for the percent P in the fertilizer). I would grow a grass this year with a pH of 5.2. I am not familiar with FL crops though. |
RE: Questions on fertilizer and herbicide
That dirt is really acidic, I would throw some lime on it. If you use the pellet lime it will start to work much faster than the powder lime, it just wont last as long. Some companies make a liquidcalcium to use this starts to work right away raisingthe ph of your soil. I have grown plots in very acidicsoil before with mixed results, it might be worth a shot, butI'm not sure I would buy very expensive seed to start out with until I got my ph more in line.
Just my opionin Greg |
RE: Questions on fertilizer and herbicide
I've heard that LabLab is more tolerable to acidic soils that other legumes. Anyone have any experience with that?

RE: Questions on fertilizer and herbicide
Mr Thomas. I have planted several food plots now and I am from Florida. My ph was a 4.7 (yikes). The year before I DID NOT lime my soil. I put in 150 pounds of 13-13-13 and planted 150 pounds of iron clay peas. That amount of peas should have been enough to cover several acres but I wanted to overplant. My growth was good and the deer ate it to nothing. I learned a lot that year.
This year I put down 1800 pounds of lime 5 months ago. I let it sit for three months. I did not spray with any herbicide but tilled in Iron clay peas and chicory. I put in 100 pounds of 10-10-10 and just 50 pounds of iron clay peas and chicory. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT MY FOOD PLOT LOOKS LIKE. I am talking knee high growth and it looks like something from the magazines. It all boils down to do it correctly the first time and the deer cant eat it down fast enough. The other miracle I found was milorganit (people crap in a bag). Smells bad but I put 100 pounds down 1 week after planting. The deer in the area vanished for almost a month. This allowed my peas to get at least three sets of leaves and be able to handle predation of my deer. That tape junk just does not work well. So in summary, dont be in a rush and get that lime down. Wait a couple of months and then plant. It made a HUGE difference for me. |
