What kind of minerals?
 

Just wondering and trying to get some new ideas of what minerals you fellas are putting out this spring. I'm usually a mineral block or liquid mineral kinda guy, but was wanting to try something new.
Looking for something that's good for antler growth and as an attractant.

Gimme some ideas. What kinda mixtures?

I use trace mineral blocks with any kind of commercial scent to attract deer to the area. They have worked well for me. Their is plenty of recipes going around for mixes you can make as well.

buckeye the best thing I have found over the years is a generic 50lb mineral
block that you can get at your local feed store for $6.00. (you can see what the blocks look like in my photo album below)
As far as antler growth etc. mineral blocks, licks, rocks and recipe's do nothing to benefit deer other than providing them with a source of salt. Pike

Di-calcium phosphate and seleniumaids lactating does at this time of year as well as the added phosphate for antler growth in bucks. Pike and I have disagreed about the benefits of the mineral supplementation. He is correct about providing extra salt if the "mineral" being supplemented is salt. There are other beneficial minerals such as those I mentioned that do much more in my experience. The trace mineral salt I add is for an attractant more than anything else. It's the phosphate and selenium I really want them to consume.

2nd., You should NEVER give your deer herd selenium!! Selenium is important to cows, but can be toxic to deer, sheep and similar ruminants. Pike

I am not writing this to argue. The name of the man I gave you- Rod Marburger is the man whose study and research of whitetail nutrition is (in-part) the basis for the Whitetail Institute's nutritional program and product development.

I do not testify to anything I haven't experienced myself. I don't care what expert says this or says that, no more than I think the "experts" in our state know what is best for the future of our deer herd. I have done my research first hand and express what I have found to have made an improvement in the deer herd I manage.

As far as selenium being bad for deer??? Umm, OKAY! Why does nearly every reputable manufacturer of whitetail supplements use selenium in their products. Because they understand the negatives of what a selenium deficit in a deer's diet will do to health of the deer. Anything taken in excess in any living animal has potential risks. Responsibilty and Common-Sense needs to be taken when providing wild or domestic animals with mineral supplementation.

My advice to anyone else reading this.... Do your own research and come up with your own conclusions. Don't take my word as being gospel, rather it is my perceived results from the work that I have personally done.

I use a local product called monster mineral, it has di cal, selenium, salt, etc, I put it out and a trail cam on it, had pictures within two hours, and camera is gettign pictures daily now from it, hope it will soon be more available I had to take quite a drive to get it.

All deer are is small cows. All ruminants will get white muscle disease with a lack of selenium (among other things especially interfering with Vit E absorbtion for added imunity benifit. Cows and all ruminants including deer benifit from selium vit E especially before giving birth and shortly after. Selenium is toxic to cows at high levels too.

A cow or a deer can lick a mineral block all day long and still not consume enough of the macro minerals, salt, and even some of the micro minerals and vitamins needed for proper development.
I am not an antler know it all, but I think they are mostly made up of phosporous, calcium, and magnesium, the mag being the mineral lacking in most posts here. Give them some loose mag-ox, dical, a decent trace mineral vitamin pack, and salt and your in business.
Most of the trace minerals in trace mineral salt are supplied in negligable amounts to do much good. PM me if you would like to know more about minerals
