RE: Cutting Down trees
YOU NEED TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WHAT TYPE OF TREES YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT CUTTING DOWN. ARE THEY WILDLIFE TREES? DO THEY PRODUCE MASK IN THE FALL? WHAT AREA OF THE COUNRTY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? DO YOU HAVE ANY FOOD PLOTS WITHIN THIS AREA. ARE ANY OF THE TREES MAKETABLE? I MANAGE A 190 ACRE TREE FARM IN EASTERN IOWA.

How much acreage are we talking about? Cutting trees will get you the new growth. It may take a few years for it to come back, but it's worth it. We are about 5 years off of a timber up at my cabin. It's thick and nasty in spots again and the deer love it. Drives are tougher, but there are more deer on the property than ever.

RE: Cutting Down trees
The property is 80 acres and we are not interested in having a company do it, it is mainly mature oak trees and poplar, hardly any pine or other trees in the area. we also own 40 acres next to this 80 that was select cut several years ago and is starting to grow back now, we also have about 1/2 acre of food plots on the 40 acre parcel which is right next to the 80 acre parcel. the property is in northern MI and is surrounded by state land so it is very heavily hunted. During the season the deer are mainly looking for cover so that is why I want to do this.

RE: Cutting Down trees
The mature Poplar(Aspen) aren't doing much for your deer. They should probably be cut. If your Oaks are crowded, thinning them will provide cover on the ground and increase acorn production of the remaining trees.
