Is this a good plant for a food plot?

If so, how much should you plant per acre?

Wheat is a very good fall/winter plot. I usually plant wheat with a grain drill at 100lbs per acre if its planted by itself. It does like a little more fertilizer than Rye though. Both does best planted in mid-Sept in my area. You can plant Wheat any where from 60 to 120lbs per acre.

I mix about 50 pounds of Buck Forage Oats mixed with about 40 pounds of wheat per acre.

Deer and hogs really like it. If you are planting it for a food plot, I suggest considering a beardless variety. Just the regular old russian beardless works about as good as anything, and it can usually be had relatively inexpensive.

How much to plant per acre depends on a lot of things. The condition of your ground, your planting equipment, germination rates, etc. For most food plots, I would say 90 lbs/acre would be a good start if using a good grain drill. Probably closer to 110-120 lbs/acre if broadcasting.

If your plot is larger than one or two acres, have soil samples taken, and pay particularly close attention to the nitrogen levels.

If your plot is smaller than that, I'd probably skip the soil sample and just add nitrogen. If the older tissue on the plants, primarily the lower leaves, show signs of rust, chlorosis, and/or firing, I would add more.

Would deer eat it just by itself (not planting it but just putting it out)?

They might depending on the time of year. Shelled corn or Soybeans would be much better. Wheat, Oats, Rye all of the small grains make better forage growing. For example 100lbs of Rye seed planted per acre, could yield 3 or 4 tons of forage per acre or more if every thing goes good.

They will eat it, but there are a lot better options out there if you are just putting food out, and eating too much can cause health problems.
