RE: what to plant
You want something for spring or fall? In the spring alfalfa is hard to beat.. Clover is your best bet. That is what I will be planting again this year. And for fall, you could do turnips, winter greens etc.. I like winter greens..

RE: what to plant
I like oats for hunting season, deer seem to walk by the wheat fields to eat them. Clover and chicory is good too, but might get cold bit up there beforethe season is over. Turnips might be good there too, they wont touch them here untill after the season is out(Jan 1). Standing corn is good too, after all the farmers have harvested theirs, your will be a magnet. Just bush hog some shooting lanesacross it and have at it.

RE: what to plant
I'm going to try turnips as a late season plot this year, but my cousin uses winter wheat and oats, and he's harvested some nice deer off them. Multiple times he's killed a buck that he's never seen before but during late season they find it, somehow. Its the only green thing left in the area. Since you already know what is currently there for them to eat, try something different that will be there once the local agriculture(corn, beans, alfalfa, etc..)aren't being hit much anymore. Spring planting.. I like clover. Alfalfa is good but make sure a late frost doesn't get the young seedlings. Nature got me this year.
Good luck, have fun. This ishis winter wheat/oats buck from this past fall, 2008(I'm jealous :D): |
RE: what to plant
Nothing wrong with planting turnips in the fall. I do it every year, but I would add some type of cereal grain with it like oats or winter rye.
