RE: Best Mineral Block
J Pike, Would you mind telling me why you think mineral supplements do not benefit deer? I'm not asking in a argumentative way. Just would like to hear your opinion. Thanks |
RE: Best Mineral Block
Haystack nothing wrong with asking:) And its not my opinion, to date there has not been one study done that showed any kind of evidence that mineral supplements, blocks, licks etc benefit the whitetail deer in any way other than a source of salt. The only study that showed any kind of positive results
was a PSU study back in 1954 were they starved the deer they used in the study. I put out atleast 15 mineral blocks a year if I thought the herd benefited in any way I would put out a 100 a year. Pike |
RE: Best Mineral Block
I really like the idea of mixing up my own mixes. I never really even thought to do that. But it would be something interesting to do, so i can see what mixes work.

RE: Best Mineral Block
I am using the TSC mineral blocks & I seem to get more possums than deer. I didn't see but maybe 1 or 2 possums all fall when I was using corn on the site & now w/ the mineral block there quite a few pictures of possum @ the block. With the possum I am also getting more yote pictures in the last 2 weeks than I did all fall. Even had one of a possum and a yote in a standoff w/ both having the teeth exposed. I think that would have been a good time for a video. The next picture was empty. I hope the yote had possum for dinner that night.

ORIGINAL: J Pike Haystack nothing wrong with asking:) And its not my opinion, to date there has not been one study done that showed any kind of evidence that mineral supplements, blocks, licks etc benefit the whitetail deer in any way other than a source of salt. A buck which receives the beneficial minerals during the approx 200 day antler growth period will have a larger rack than a buck who had to acquire minerals in the amounts which occur naturally in his environment. These minerals are also beneficial to does who are nursing fawns as well as the fawns who receive the additional minerals and vitamins from their mother's milk. A buck's antler consists of 80% collagen protein during the growth stage and becomes 55% mineral once the antler hardens. Minerals consumed become deposited onto the protein matrix of a buck's antlers making the antler become harder. It is hard to contest the benefit of mineral supplementation if these factors are understood. Protein and minerals are just as much a benefit to deer as they are to any other animal including ourselves. Rod Marburger's study has shown the correlation and benefits of higher protein and mineral consumption among whitetail deer. |
RE: Best Mineral Block
My mix
100# trace mineral salt 40# lime 50# di-cal 50# plain salt Mix it all up in a wheelbarrow, makes 8 30lb buckets full. Its only like $30, and makes enoughfor the whole dang neigborhood. Put it out in spring, top off with some trace mineral salt in late summer. The salt leaches through the soil faster than the dical and the lime. The salt doesn't do much if anything for them, but they like it. A bunch of dical on the ground doesn't interest them one bit. The dical and lime "may" help with antler growth. If your property has a good mix of woods, agriculture, and cutover, the deerwill probably get everything they need from nature. Ilook at it this way, it cant hurt to put minerals out and might help. If nothing else it will get you some awesome trail cam pics in late summer. And its dirt cheap! |
