I know of some who plant winter wheat after harvesting a different small grain in the fall. If they had good weed control on therecently harvested fieldthey quite oftenwill plant using no-till equipmentwithout anytilling. Working the soil can bring up new weed seeds.

If you just broadcast on top there is a lot of waste. A simple home built drag helps a lot. Just enough to cover the seed. This way the seed doesn't get eaten and it has a better chance of germinating. A drag can just be a section of chain link fence or some landscape timbers bolted together.

It is far better if you can cover it with a little bit of soil. You will get better germination rates, and not as much of it will get eaten. Birds will go to town on exposed wheat seeds.
