Heat tolerant crop?

What can I plant in east Tx that is drought and heat tolerant? I'm leaning towards chickory and would like to try soy beans as well. The plot will be on a logging road, long and narrow. It will get a good amount of sun.

Extreme may work, I think it is supposed to be very, very hardy regardless of conditions

I hunt in E.Tx also, I've had very good success with Iron/Clay Cowpeas. They are tolerant to drought/heat. Best of all, the deer love them, they are high in protein, and with good conditions are very lush, and continue to grow after grazing.

Lablab is suppose to work. There is suppose to be a browse tolerant climbing soybean available, but I havn't seen them yet.

Soybeans are not drought tolerant, and not real heat tolerant, either. They don't grow well in most parts of Texas.

Peas (black-eyed, purple hull, iron and clay, and the like) are not a bad option for a warm-season plot. Beardless winter wheat is hard to beat for a cool-season plot.

Thanks guys. I think peas will be the cost effective option for me.

Lablab might work in east Texas. Where I'm at, we just simply don't get enough rainfall for it to work unless it is a really, really wet summer. And we only have one of those maybe once every five or ten years.
