Interesting..... The way the guy in the article was talking, you would think there were none in the lower 48.
I've always felt they were cyclical, and I'm sure this is just an off year.

Northern VA, (same area the article was about) crop was little to none. My favorite spot has about 20 white oaks with in a 300 yard diameter. Hardly any fell, making an area that is usually hot, just luke warm.

Hurricane Gustav knocked them all out before they were matured. The deer wouldn't touch them.
