Rye Grain

Does anyone plant rye grain (not rye grass) for deer? I heard rye grain is very hardy and will grow in areas a lot of plants won't. I am looking to plant something next fall (August) that can withstand some shade and will attract deer during hunting season. Would this be a good option? I will be planting on a gasline through my property approx (10-12yds wide and 125yds long). The plot sits in the middle of hardwoods and would make a great hunting plot if I can just get something to grow.

RE: Rye Grain

I've planted Rye (grain type) for several years and it works great. I live in central IL, plant it about first Sept., I've used it on small spots (5 yards x 20 yards) completly surrounded by woods, up to 3 acre fields. With the small spots in the woods, the plants may not be as thick, but they are a great place to ambush the deer.

RE: Rye Grain

Here in Montana we have a short growing season. Most of our rain shows up in May and June. If I planted rye in June can I clip it in July or August to keep in green and still growing? If I planted it in Sept I don't know if there will be enough moisture to get it off to a good start before winter.
