RE: planting corn

It will depend on what equipment you have and your soil. My soil here in IL is fair to good, I've limed fields to get PH right. I first go in with a moldboard plow. I have a two bottom one, it works great for turning grass and weeds, old corn stalks under. Then I disk the ground and then pull a harrow over the ground to smooth and flatten itand then plant the beans or corn. I have just broadcast the beans and lightly disked them in. But corn needs to be planted with a planter to get the seed to the right depth and covered.

RE: planting corn

I'd stick with Roundup ready soybeans if I were you. Till up your plot, try and get most of the grass and weeds turned under. You can broadcast the beans by hand, about 1 1/2 bags per acre would be a good rate. Then quickly run the tiller back over the plot to try and cover most beans lightly. Don't worry to much about the beans that will be left on top, if you get some good rains they will sprout and take root. Depending on how much grass or weeds come up you may have to spray them twice. When beans are 6 to 10 inches tall spray weeds and then again when beans are about 18 inches. You can use a hand sprayer for this.

Plant roundup ready corn as well.

RE: planting corn

Basically the same prep with the equipment you have. I have broadcast corn with a fertilizer spreader and had pretty good results. After speading, just disk(or till very lightly)lightly in the soil less than 2" deep. +1 about roundup ready beans/corn. Well worth the extra costs. Ph around 6.5, fertilize with 10/10/10 at planting. Come back with more nitrogen for corn when its a couple feet high.

where can i get roundup ready corn? and soybeans?

RE: planting corn

In Ohio, it ought to be pretty easy. Ask the farmer down the road where he buys his. They should sell to you too, but probably at ahigher price(forthe amountyou need dont worry about it). I get mine from a local fertilizer manufacturer that sells chemicals, seed, and animal feed.

I am thinking of geting one of those push type garden planters that use different plate for each different type of seed. I'm just planting small plots and the walking behind it will do me some good!!

Planting corn can be done by hand. I don't know how much you are looking to plant.
Just make sure you prep the soil and plant to the right depth. I have brassicas planted this year and clover. Next year I will plant corn as a late winter food source. There are no acorns this year, and they have hammered the brassicas. Tough hunting this year though.

Yes I would. They are about done with the tops now, and they are eating the bulbs now.

Tape off a 100'x100' section you want planted. Dig 20 holes, 5 feet apart and did each hole atleast 1 foot deep. Then pour 5 quarts of seeds down each hole and bury them. Then dig another 20 holes in between your first twenty, again 1 foot deep and pour as much lime and fertilizer together that it takes to fill up the hole. Water each plant daily, three times a day.

I'm just kiddin- don't do a thing I said. I was just messin with ya buddy.

RE: planting corn

For Brassica In the Northeast - Spray round up in June -

Then inMid July when all the grasses are DEAD -
Disk & Prep soil with a firm seed bed -

Lime & Fertilize as required (brassicas like lots of Nitrogen and a PH above 5.5 with 6.5 being excellent)

Then Broadcast 4-8 lbs of Brassica Mix as per the bag instructions ( canola/rapseed usually - but also turnips, Kale and other similar type plants are in most mixes). ROLL the seeds in ( do not disk them in).

Synopsis - June - March:

I plant them most years - but I've never been really happy with the way the deer use them DURING deer season. They always eat the Soybeans first during hunting season - and by January/February start to key in on the brassica. I'd suspect that if all you offered was brassica - and your neighbors didn't leave a lot of other crops out - it would be a different story...................................they are easy to plant!

Maybe plant the end of July instead of Mid July -
Otherwise the same.

Brassica are a funny lot -
Some deer LOVE them - others warm up to them slowly.

I use them as a cover crop for Clovers too - and the next year mow and manage the clover for 1-2 more years.
