Army Worms
 

I had a food plot of wheat, turnips, and clover up and growing for one month. I checked it a week ago Sunday and it was the best looking plot that we planted this year. This Sunday there was nothing in the plot except for dirt and turnips. There wasn't even sign that something had been planted there. I have heard that this might have been done by armyworms. I live in Kansas and have never heard of such a thing? Any ideas on what happened?

Should have been a lot of worm crap in the field if it was army worms. Was there any other foliage around the plot that was stripped? Animal tracks?

It could definitely be army worms. It's easy to tell though. You can probably still find some in the field if they're the culprit. They're small caterpillar looking worms with black strips (most species) and will hide in decaying foliage just above the ground. If you see not animal tracks, etc., and confirm army worms, I'd recommend using Sevin. I prefer the powder form. It'sa systemic insecticide...meaning you sprinkle the powder on the plant, the plant absorbs the powder, thus becoming poisonous to the worms. Hope this helps somewhat.

Armyworms are most active at night. Look for them in the early morning or late evening.

That sucks. I got blister bugs in one of my plots a few years ago. They ate the darn plot clean up. Seven killed them for me, but they shore put a hurt on them.
