Clover - Final mowing Labor Day Updated PICS
PICS added 9-1-08 -
several days after mowing ========================================= Got two of 3 Clover plots mowed tonight - and hope to have the last one mowed by Labor Day. I like to top off the plots - mow them down to 6-8" for the final mowing. Mowing any flowered weeds now like Queen Annes lace, aster, Goldenrod, milkweed - etc - pretty much ends their growth for the summer....... yet the clover really will take off with the cool evenings and usually ample moisture in Sept. I like about 6 weeks "fresh growth" going into Bow Season in Mid Oct. I mow 2 or 3 times per year on most clover plots - 1. around Memorial Day 2. around July 4th (if needed) 3. around Labor Day For me.......Mowing keeps the clover plot vigorous and lush - and helps the clover dominate overmost weeds. Once grasses exceed 50% -of the plot - all is lost with a "mowing only" weed control program - usually for me its about 4 years - and time to plow it under anyhow for corn the next spring. I'm not a big fan of Poast or other weed control chemicals on my clover plots. FH |

Man I wish my clover looked that good. The grought has taken its toll, but if I understand, next year will be the grow time for the clover.
