alright to put lime and fert down after seeding??
so i had the plans of putting the lime and fert down today and then disking them in tommorrow and then planting, but its raining and lime doesnt spread in the rain and of course there not open on sat. so if we planted it tommorrow as this is the first rain we have gotten in a while and would like to get them in the ground asap would if be bad to put the lime at fert down a day or two later??

Not real sure on the lime, but I would wait until the plants have3 leaves on them to put the fertilizer down. They may be germinating in 2-3 days and the fert can burn them.

Putting down lime this late probably won't do a lot of good for the seeds you are planting. Lime takes 6 or so months to work. It won't hurt to wait to fertilize, but I would try to do it just before a slow rain.

It depends a lot on what kind of fertilizer you are putting down. I would either fertilize before I planted, or top dress with fertilizer after the plants were up and going pretty good.
As for the lime, you'd be wasting your money. The lime needs to be plowed in. Preferably plowed over a couple of times to help mix it in a little better. |

Sounds like this might be your first foodplot. Both lime and fert need to be disked under before putting out seed. This will allow it to melt into the soil where it is rather than running downhill and pooling in spots if left on top of the ground when rain hits it.Lime now won't help this years plot....the lime will help it next year. If the pH is really low it could be a waste of time and money to fertilize this year. You might consider just planting wheat, rye, and/or oats, whatever is cheapest this first time, and plan for next spring or fall plot when the pH will be right.

waste of time and money to do it now, wait until next spring and do it then, oats will grow just fine in soil with low pH

thanks for your replies, as mentioned this is our first food plot and realize that this years isnt not going to be ideal but will hopefully get us a good start as to next year. We planted buck forage oats. and was able to get lime in the ground and disked in good before planting. We used a high cal powder lime which is supposed to start doing some good right away but mostly down the road. Hopefully by getting the lime in first this fall next year will be that much better.

good chioce for a food plot, ive used buck forage oats for years and there great. good deal with the lime to, the faster you can get it into the ground the faster it will start to work. if you have put the correct amount, the plot will be in great shape for next year

Two products will help you out RIGHT NOW without risking the health of your plants.
Liquid Lime - works within 30 days! Unlike the 3-6 months it takes pelletized lime to work. You spray it on & it's absolutely OK for this stuff to come into contact with emergent vegetation. Milorganite - A 5-2-0 Organic fertilizer that a) doesn't require being watered in, and b) will not burn existing emergent vegetation. Google either of these products and you will find where to purchase them. Given the scenario you've described, $11 for the Milorganite & $15 for the Liquid Lime would be money well spent given your investment in time, effort & money to date. Rob |
