First Food Plot

Finally had some time to work on the first food plot I have tried. It is back in the woods that had orginally been cleared for what looks likea garden about 20-30 yrs ago, at least according to the owners. I am planning to cut down the trees in the next week to get some light to it. But just broke up the ground and put out some lime and fertilizer.

First impression -
still looks pretty shady

- sure a plot will grow if the soil is good -but look at it knowing that shade might play a role in how much biomass the plot will produce. If the plot is nibbled bare - then your deer population is telling you that you need more - and if its not eaten a lot - then they either don't like it a whole lot - or you don't have a ton of deer feeding here.

I figure its about 1/5 acre (9000 square feet)- does that sound right?

Actually its about 1/3 third of an acre for now. Did all this in about 3 hours with a 65 year old dad who just had knee surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago to repair a completely torn tendon. He wasn't much of help to me other than us being together and enjoying the outdoors and trying to help our passion. I know that I have to cut down the trees but time constrainted us the other day. But thanks for the comments.

good looking spot. even with the shade you might have good luck with clovers, especially white clover. very shade tolerant. anyway, keep up the good work.

Back in the woods, cleared spot, sounds more like an old marijuana patch. Till the meth heads took over the business it was common around here to find little patches all over the woods.
