frost seeding

Hi guys, looking to overseed last years plots with clover, alfalfa and chicory. Here is Ontario we still have about 3' of snow on the ground in the bush but looking at the forcast it should mostly be gone by next week. How much seed shouldI use for "frost seeding" and when is the best time? Appreciate any insight.

RE: frost seeding

Based on the snow that I have left on my property near Wiarton it should be in the next few weeks. If you have a thin stand of clover, etc. still on the field just seed at 1/2 rate (from the CO-OP) to thicken. You want to put the seed down so it is still getting frost during the night. That'll be for at least the next month. The seeds won't start to germinate until the avg. temp is about 5 C. or above. Last weekend it was still so cold that the sap wasn't running at the Purple Valley maple syrup festival. I won't be getting my trees for planting from the conservation authority until the end of April.
